Small Business Legal Workshop by Morris Law Firm, PLLC at ART.WORK AUSTIN
ART.WORK AUSTIN hosted Emily Morris of The Morris Law Firm, PLLC for a Legal Workshop for small business. Emily was generous enough to spend a few hours with us walking us through Business filing types, intellectual property, and contracts. The workshop was a huge benefit to anyone who attended which included, photographers, officiants, videographers, and accountants.
For Business Filings she walked us through Sole Proprietor, General Partnership, Limited Liability Company, Limited Liability Partnership, S-corp, and Corporation filings. We we shocked to find out the most of us were filed as a type that is not necessarily our optimal choice and by switching we could have a lot of benefits including security.
When she covered intellectual Property we learned the difference and importance of Trademarks, Copyrights, Patents, Trade Secrets, and Licensing and Contracting. Do you know the difference in a Trademark VS a Copyright VS a DBA? If not maybe you should give her a call because most likely your business or idea is not fully protected.
The contracts portion really hit home and I now know I need to have a few more lines and clauses in mine. Such as how will legal disputes be resolved should there be an issue and non compete clauses.
I highly recommend seeking legal advice if you own a small business. I wish I would have done it years ago. Make sure your name and future are secure with a couple hours of professional review and a few lines of text.
